Fireworks Safety

Follow these best practices to keep your family, neighbors, and property safe every time you celebrate.

Best Practices

👁️

Read All Labels First

Always read the instructions on every firework before lighting. Follow the manufacturer's directions exactly — different products behave differently.

📏

Keep Safe Distances

Maintain at least 35 feet of clearance for handheld items and 70+ feet for larger shells and cakes. Keep spectators well behind the shooter.

💧

Have Water Ready

Keep a garden hose connected and a bucket of water nearby at all times. Soak used fireworks before disposal to prevent fires.

🕯️

Light One at a Time

Only light one firework at a time and step back immediately after lighting. Never hold a lit firework in your hand.

🚫

Never Relight Duds

If a firework fails to go off, wait at least 20 minutes, then soak it in water before approaching. Never attempt to relight a dud.

🌳

Shoot in Open Areas

Use fireworks in large open spaces away from buildings, trees, dry grass, and overhead power lines. Avoid rooftops and enclosed areas.

👨‍👩‍👧

Supervise Children

Children should never handle fireworks — even sparklers burn at 1,200°F. An adult should always be present and in control of all fireworks.

🍺

No Alcohol While Shooting

Never handle fireworks while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Fireworks require your full attention and quick reflexes.

👕

Wear Protective Clothing

Wear safety glasses and avoid loose, flowing clothing when lighting fireworks. Natural fibers like cotton are less flammable than synthetics.

⚠️ Important Warnings

  • Never place any part of your body over a firework while lighting it.
  • Never point or throw fireworks at another person or animal.
  • Never carry fireworks in your pocket — friction can cause ignition.
  • Never use fireworks indoors or near a vehicle.
  • Never alter, modify, or combine fireworks.
  • Never use illegal fireworks — M-80s, cherry bombs, and similar devices are dangerous and prohibited.

🪣 Safe Disposal

  • After the show, soak all used fireworks in a bucket of water for at least 20 minutes.
  • Place fully soaked fireworks in a metal trash can away from flammable materials.
  • Check the area for any smoldering debris before leaving.
  • Never place used fireworks in a plastic bag or indoor trash can while still warm.
